I thought I'd just use a post to make a couple of blanket clarifications before I dive in and start answering questions, and thanking you guys for all the kind comments.
1) I'm really not thinking about doing an entire remix of Switch from Jim's perspective. Switch is, and always was, about Bones in my mind, especially all the meanings of the word. I purposefully had him dwelling on the notion of wanting to switch places in other universes as a nod to the fact that we know he's already in one, and because his story (and his history) was a switched up version of TOS!Bones. Plus, of course, switching his nickname from Len to Leo was another means of differentiating him. Then, of course, there are sexuality implications, i.e., "even when he played ball, he was a switch hitter," and all of their iterations.
2) So, what I meant when I said I was thinking about Jim's perspective, is that I was considering writing a discreet story, set during the Academy years and in the Switch-verse, like ... maybe during the time that Jim was on the Farragut and his only form of communication with Leo was writing letters. Something like that.
And I was wondering, if you had to pick a time or an incident within the story, where you wanted to know what Jim's perspective was, what would it be?
Unfortunately, I did not express myself clearly at all, but ... that's what I meant.
3) I'm working on edits and will start slugging them into place, which will mean that some of what you've read will change. Nothing structural or major, except for one problematic section with some dubious medical gibberish, but the actions and consequences of behaviors will remain the same. However, I'm afraid that even if you've grown attached to certain awkward sentences, they will change. (Sorry,
barely_alive).
4) Speaking of awkward sentences, characters who change names, tense slippage, verb subject disagreement and all manner of horrible things, so far,
taverl,
between_names and
extrabitter have said that they'd be willing to be an extra set of eyeballs after I get things in semi-ship shape. If you're inclined to join them, do let me know, and I'll let you know when I'm ready!
5) Thanks!

Date: 2010-02-12 01:43 am (UTC)My assumption when you mentioned doing it from Jim's POV wasn't that it would be all redone, but maybe a few parts that we never saw (from large gaps) or during particularly poignant times. Like:
I would love to see Jim reading the journals on the Farragut and more of what he went thru.
His thoughts when he was out in the desert and getting back to Bones.
Where he went when he disappeared before the 25th anniversary of the Kelvin/his birthday. And of course all the gooey angst of his time apart from Bones.
And hell yeah, I would LOVE to see Jim's absolute panic during Bones accident.
What Jim is thinking with Bones wearing his ring.
I think you did an amazing job of making us 'see' Jim through Bones eyes. I could go on and on. But you know, anything angsty/hurt comforty you want to throw in there would be lovely.
I still can't put together a coherent thought on the epilogue and didn't want to ramble worse than I usually do, so maybe when I've come out of the corner, *g* I'll send you a message.
Whatever you decide, I have no doubt it will be beautiful.

Date: 2010-02-12 02:49 am (UTC)Try as he might, he couldn’t wash the image of Jim Kirk -- pants open and head thrown back against a back corridor wall at Finnegan’s as he sunk his hands into the hair of the broad-shouldered, dark-haired man who knelt at his feet -- out of his mind. Jim's eyes had been heavy-lidded, his mouth open as he gasped, hips bucking forward as the man pulled them toward him. Jim’d looked down, and laughed a little through a moan, urging the man on. ‘Just like that,’ he’d said roughly, and the way he moved turned his head into the light enough that Leo could see his blue eyes flashing. ‘Just like that.’
In my head, this was a Bones-substitute for Jim, and I'd love to hear if it was so. I'm also clearly the perv of the requesters so far, since yes, more lovely smut would be appreciated.
As far as the suggestions already made, all of which I like, I'd rather your choice be a time when Jim was drawn toward Bones rather than running away.
And even if my requests don't make the cut, I just want to say thank you for writing this beautiful (monster-sized) fic. I really don't know what I'll do, since checking this was part of my daily routine!

I most heartily second this.
And would like to add my thanks too - you have created not just the Bones/Jim epic, but the most detailed exploration of the world the film presents to us that I have seen; I have a lot of faith in you as a writer, as being able to construct such a thing from comparatively little information is quite a talent.

Date: 2010-02-12 03:45 am (UTC)I'd also be interested in hearing more of Jim's thoughts during their time in Georgia, but that's more of a selfish request, as that's one of my absolute favorite parts of story. :)

Date: 2010-02-12 05:37 am (UTC)so anyway, that's it for me i think. of course i can't really promise that because another thought might strike me, hahaha.
(do you think you would consider writing something from Patty's POV? i adore her so very much and would love to see her fall in love again... la, don't listen to me, hehe.)

Date: 2010-02-12 05:45 am (UTC)1. like everyone else, I'd love to know Jim's thoughts during Bones' accident
2. We've read so much about Bones' perspective on Jim, I'd like to read one incident that highlights Jim's perspective about Bones...
Honestly, I'm guaranteed to love anything that you write...so my only request is that you never stop!

Date: 2010-02-12 07:05 am (UTC)I would also like to know what he was thinking when he survived that desert survival class, when he saved Gary Mitchell, and all he had to do was survive to get to Bones. I loved that.
I'd also like to hear about the moment of vulnerability when Leo kisses the whipping scar. That moment nearly broke me, and I suspect, it nearly broke Jim as well. I'd like to know what he was thinking.
I would also like to see what Jim thought at the very beginning when Bones saved him from himself, as people were mocking him for being George Kirk's son, the first time that Leo takes pity on Kirk, before he's ever named McCoy Bones. And on that note, what did Kirk think when he awoke in Bones bed that first time after his allergic reaction.
I always like to see the beginning and the ending of things.

Date: 2010-02-12 05:06 pm (UTC)i second this. i thought of this last night. i would love to know what jim is thinking at the beginning from this part, and even before on the shuttle.

Date: 2010-02-12 03:01 pm (UTC)I would dearly love to see everything from Jim's POV during that episode, especially the details that Patty later recalled to Bones in the her visit!
All I can say is the fact that you want to continue with stories from Jim's POV makes me a very happy person!

Date: 2010-02-15 08:20 pm (UTC)The day they met; what Jim thought of Bones; which includes his thoughts when he first decided to start crawling into Bones' bed to sleep.
His relationship with Gaila and the KFF.
The Farragut time, if it also allows Jim to think about past interactions with and feelings for Bones. This would include Grams invitation for him to help celebrate Bones' 30th birthday.
How he feels after he finds out that Bones had slept with a man.
Where Jim goes and why (if he understands his own behavior) when he does not sleep in Bones' bed.
Jim saving Bones' life after the lab accident.
Definitely the time in Georgia; their first couple of kisses "Just so you know, Jim" sigh! Gram; how confused Jim is by the tender feelings Gram and Bones show him. I had invisioned him freaking out and running away and Bones coming after him to soothe his emotional turmoil at being cared about.
The ring; how much tactical planning went into that decision to give it Bones for safekeeping.
I really wish you would do a first year story of the Enterprise crew including Patty as the counselor. You are so amazing at developing additional characters who J&B interact with. This would be a challenging time for Jim. Genius though he may be he is young and it would not be easy to handle all aspects of running a huge ship. How Bones would be there to support him and call him an idiot when needed.
Anyway, whatever you write I know I will enjoy it. I am glad you still love these characters enough to want to breathe more life into them.
Thank you.

Date: 2010-02-16 09:02 pm (UTC)1) I'm in total agreement with everyone re: Jim's POV when Leo was dying of CHFII. While reading Patty's description of Jim's desperation gave us a very clear picture of what he was going through, the angst junkie in me would love to see what was happening on the inside while he was freaking out on the outside.
2) This?
'"All those times," Jim began in a low, raspy voice, "that I climbed into your bed after I took a shower?"
Leo had to make an effort to drag his eyes from the sight of Jim's hands washing his own pectoral muscles, the flow of bubbles streaming down his torso and over his forearms, curling around the base of his erect cock.
"I was in here thinking about you," Jim said. "Wishing you were in here with me, watching me." Jim moved his hands lower on his torso, making lazy x-es as he washed from side-to-side. "Wishing that it was your hands on me."'
Um...yeah.
3) The glimpses of Spock/Uhura you gave us were so sweet, I'd love to see your take on that relationship through Jim's eyes. Maybe the "I'll be monitoring your frequency" kiss on in the transporter room?
4) (And I cannot *believe* I'm suggesting this) Blue-eyed great-grandbabies.
That is all.

Date: 2010-02-18 08:46 pm (UTC)And I'll add one more vote for Jim's time on the Farragut (and I'd love to hear what Captain Garrovick thought of him).
But I'm pretty easy. Just write more in this universe, please!

Date: 2010-03-01 10:34 am (UTC)The one moment that strikes me most is the period of time between Jim visiting Bones in Georgia and the first kiss up to their fight and the aftermath of it.
We've seen this entire period of time from Bones'POV, but in essence it's also very much about how Jim reacts and feels about what is going on between the two of them. It's the one part of the story where I would have loved to have a bit more insight into Jim, especially since it all culminates into that epic fight.

Date: 2010-03-01 10:40 am (UTC)i did expres my which for bleu eyed grand babies, didn't I.
And more gram is always nice
And maybe a bit more of your Jim and Winona. because I liked her, your Winona.

Date: 2010-03-02 12:27 am (UTC)But really? I have no idea if you plan a sequel or anything, but maybe an... addendum short story? Because I'd love to see your Jim and Bones go through the events of the TOS episode "The City on the Edge of Forever." Especially if it's from Jim's point of view. I have no idea why, but somehow the idea of tweaking Jim's separation anxiety just has crazy appeal.
And as long as I'm wishing for long shots here, why not throw in a pony, a vacation to Brazil, and my own personal yeoman. ;D

Date: 2010-03-26 03:19 pm (UTC)1. Jim's time in Georgia/Leo's birthday
2. Leo's accident and Jim's subsequent meeting with Gram
3. Farragut letter exchange & whatever Jim might have been up to
4. When he took Leo flying/when Leo decided he would have a conference (sort of cementing them in space)
5. In chapter 31 where Leo admitting 'helping' Patty...Jim must have been, well, I'm not sure entirely. That'd be interesting.
I'm sure there are more, but I don't want to inundate you. I love your Jim. :)
