Nono, I completely agree with you, with one minor bobble which is the movie's fault. I find it odd that Sulu was in a Cadet's uniform at the end of the movie (leading me to think that he was a cadet (which wouldn't be a stretch, considering he's only 21 in the movie))(Chekov as well, but his background wasn't completely fleshed out beyond being plucked from from a Russian Observatory.) But again, movie's fault, not yours.
Many of us are definitely looking at SF from a geocentric angle, I think. I found the rank translations interesting when I was watching the Japanese version, for example. But that's neither here nor there. :)
SF has been notorious for rankjumping at convinient times throughout the series...guess we will have to deal. :) (And they had a bad habit of completely ditching jg, particularly in TOS, which also doesn't help.)
