I was very struck when I saw the movie that the events were already altered -- Jim being born in space, etc. -- his parents in space together. It just seemed to me that even before things happened, it was an alternate universe. And knowing the propensity for such things to appear in the Trek-verse, I was fine with that. I was sort of surprised that everyone thought that the Reboot was a literal overwrite of TOS. I always thought it was a parallel of sorts, and I always had that in mind, which is why Leo thinks about other McCoys from the beginning.
